Waterbugs, Are They A Cockroach Or Not?

Waterbugs, Are They A Cockroach Or Not?

Here is Brooks’ weekly blog…

Now, I am from Cleveland, Ohio and Waterbugs aren’t as common there.  I remember when I lived in Greenville, Nc several years ago and experienced these for the first time.  I didn’t know what to think because they looked like cockroach and I was freaked out.  I was quickly told that they are Waterbugs and I don’t need to worry about them.  During my time living there I learned to live with the little critters.

Now, being back in NC I didn’t forget about those things.  I remember telling my fiancee about them for the first time.  Then I also remember her seeing one for the first time and she was freaked out.  She told me there was a cockroach in the bathroom and it had wings.  I think it even flew at her.  All I could do was laugh because I knew it was a Waterbug.

Just recently, I came to work and opened my bookbag.  When I opened it something was crawling around inside.  I tried closing it quickly to take the bag outside and release whatever was inside.  I was so nervous and scared I couldn’t shut the bag.  As I attempted to close it a Waterbug came flying out.  At 5am, this was the last thing I wanted to deal with.

That event prompted me to write this blog.

Now, we call them Waterbugs, but what are they really? Waterbugs is a nickname for a few insects that live in moist, watery areas.  The Waterbugs we come to love in NC are Oriental Cockroaches.  These bugs are native to Africa.  They are a shiny black or dark brown color.  The adult males are smaller than the females.  You will always find them by water as water is essential for them to live.

So, for those of you that think Waterbugs aren’t cockroaches, you are wrong.  They are cockroaches just not as nasty as the ones we normally think of.  Waterbugs are harmless to humans but they sure are nasty looking.
