My six-year-old son and I finally had the opportunity to visit the New Bern Firemen’s Museum this weekend (he’s been begging to go since it opened for the season earlier this month). He had a wonderful time playing in the children’s area, checking out the fire engines, and ringing the bell on one of them which made him an “official fire chief” for the day!
The museum is the original home for the first chartered fire company in North Carolina. Established in 1955, it preserves the history of firefighting in the city and takes its visitors back in time with so much to see and experience as well as learn.
The Firemen’s Museum is operated by the Friends of the New Bern Firemen’s Museum, an independent not-for-profit group. Donations are accepted and there are a number of fundraising events held throughout the year. If you would like information on visiting the museum and even becoming a friend of the museum yourself, visit their website at firemensmuseum.com.
